Understanding Nottoway County Releases
Nottoway County has no county-operated adult jail roster. A person arrested by the sheriff or another local agency is commonly held at Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville, a regional facility that serves six member counties. The jail's public lookup is limited to people who are incarcerated there and under its custody. Once a person leaves that custody episode, the live result may vanish. The durable evidence is then the jail's booking and release record, the matching court file, or a record from the agency that received the person.
“Released” must be tied to one custodian. A person may leave PRJ for the community after bond, dismissal, time served, or sentence completion. The same person may instead transfer to the Virginia Department of Corrections, another jail, the U.S. Marshals Service, or immigration custody. Work release and home electronic monitoring can allow movement outside the building while legal custody continues. A missing roster result does not reveal which event occurred.
Nottoway County Release Types
The court order, jail event, and destination should agree before an outcome is described. Bond permits pretrial release under stated conditions, but it does not end the criminal case. A dismissal or acquittal ends a charge, yet another case or hold may keep the person confined. Probation is a court-ordered community status. Parole is conditional release for a legally eligible sentence and is not the usual rule for modern Virginia felonies.
| Type | Meaning | Best next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | Community release while a case remains pending | Nottoway court bond entry plus PRJ release time |
| Time served | Credited custody satisfies the term in that case | Final order and PRJ release record |
| Probation | Court-ordered community supervision | Sentencing order and VADOC District 7 |
| Parole | Conditional release from an eligible state sentence | Parole Board action and completed VADOC release |
| Transfer | PRJ custody ends but other custody continues | Receiving jail, VADOC, BOP, USMS, or ICE source |
| Final discharge | Custody and any identified supervision have ended | Agency discharge record and court file |
Read Nottoway Release Records
A release record documents the end of a particular jail stay. It is not the arrest record, booking record, or court disposition, though those records help identify the same episode. A focused PRJ request should supply the adult's full legal name, aliases, date of birth or booking number, approximate booking date, Nottoway arresting agency, and court case number when known. Those facts help Records find the right entry without asking staff to conduct open-ended research.
| Record field | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Name and identifiers | The person and booking episode to which the event belongs |
| Booking date or number | The specific intake, especially when one person has several cases |
| Actual release date and time | When PRJ recorded the end of that custody episode |
| Authority or category | Bond, court action, sentence completion, transfer, or other maintained reason |
| Destination or custodian | Whether the person went to the community or another agency, if public |
| Booking photograph | The routine adult intake image tied to the booking, subject to lawful limits |
Each field has limits. A bond entry does not prove that all holds cleared. A release category does not erase a pending case. A photograph records intake and says nothing by itself about guilt or present custody. The most reliable result joins the PRJ event to the correct court and receiving-agency records.
Virginia Code § 2.2-3706 generally requires disclosure of an adult's routine initial-intake booking photograph, subject to the law's narrow felony-investigation delay. That rule does not open the whole jail file. Medical, security, juvenile, victim, investigative, sealed, and expunged material can remain protected. A narrow request for routine booking and release fields is more precise than a demand for every record about the person.
Request Nottoway Release Records
Piedmont Regional Jail is the normal custodian for its booking and release fields. The Nottoway Sheriff's Office is the better route for sheriff-created arrest, warrant-service, or incident records. Under Virginia Code § 2.2-3704, a request should reasonably identify existing records. It need not force an agency to answer questions or build a new list.
- Name the adult, date of birth or booking number, and approximate booking date.
- Ask for the existing booking and release record as maintained, including actual release time and category.
- Request electronic copies, segregated nonexempt portions, and an advance cost estimate.
- Send the request to PRJ Records, not the sheriff, when PRJ held the person.
- Use the court clerk or VADOC for records maintained by those separate custodians.

Virginia agencies generally respond within five working days by producing records, citing a withholding basis, reporting that records cannot be found, or invoking extra time allowed by law. Charges may not exceed actual cost. A deposit may be required when the estimate is more than $200. PRJ publishes no fixed record fee schedule or public-counter hours, so ask first.
Public display and agency retention are separate. PRJ publishes no set period for keeping a former detainee visible online, and no official 24-hour or 72-hour released-person archive was found. The underlying booking or release record may remain under a Library of Virginia retention series after the screen entry is gone. Ask Records which series applies and whether it still holds the requested date range rather than assuming a fixed number of years.
Nottoway Release Records After Sealing
Public access can change even when the custody event was real. Virginia's operative expungement framework changes on December 1, 2026, and the judiciary already provides criminal-sealing forms. The version of § 19.2-392.2 in force on the date of a request must be checked. Sealed or expunged records may be removed from public results or withheld under the governing law.
Before the change, qualifying routes include acquittal, nolle prosequi or dismissal, and certain identity misuse claims. The petition goes to the Circuit Court where the case ended. The new framework has separate conditions and exclusions. A no-result can therefore reflect lawful access limits, not proof that an arrest or jail stay never occurred.
Find Released Nottoway County Inmates
The search should form a timeline. Start with the last known custodian, record the time of the check, then follow only documented events. Use a full name plus a date of birth, booking number, VADOC number, case number, or other firm identifier. Names alone can join the wrong person or the wrong booking.
- Check the official PRJ offender lookup. A positive match supports current PRJ custody at that time.
- If absent, search Virginia Jail VINE and read the exact release, transfer, or other event.
- Search Virginia OCIS in Nottoway for bond, disposition, sentence, remand, and later entries.
- Ask PRJ Records for the actual release date, time, and category for the exact booking.
- When transfer is indicated, search VADOC, BOP, another jail, or ICE as appropriate.
- Check VADOC Community Corrections if the sentence calls for supervision after release.
A court order supplies legal authority, while PRJ documents physical custody. Neither source replaces the other. A court may grant bond before it is posted and accepted. Another hold can also delay exit. When the person is missing from a live roster, describe only that absence until a release event or receiving custodian is found.
When Nottoway Jail Releases Occur
PRJ adopted a distinctive local rule effective July 21, 2026. Its revised release-hours notice says releases are not processed from 10:00 p.m. through 7:00 a.m., regardless of release reason. Legal eligibility or court paperwork may arrive during that period, but the physical gate event waits for the permitted processing window.

The policy does not promise release at exactly 7:00 a.m. Identity checks, property processing, transport, paperwork, and outstanding holds can still affect timing. An order time or VINE alert should not be treated as a pickup appointment. Confirm the completed event and actual timestamp with PRJ.
Nottoway Release or Alternative Custody
PRJ's work-release and home-electronic-monitoring programs explain why someone can be outside the jail yet remain in legal custody. The official program page requires approval and eligibility review. It also identifies transportation, GPS monitoring for HEM, and the absence of an outstanding detainer among the program conditions.
The published charges are program costs, not general release fees. Work release requires $220 up front plus $90 each week. HEM requires $500 up front plus $115 each week, with the initial amount covering signup and the first three weeks. A court or VADOC approval and program participation should never be rewritten as an unconditional discharge. Ask for the maintained status and order.
Nottoway Courts and Physical Release
Nottoway General District Court's Wednesday schedule specifically includes bond matters and video arraignments with PRJ before trials. A felony can later move into Circuit Court for indictment, trial, and sentencing. That local sequence often requires three pieces: the General District bond or preliminary event, the Circuit Court final order when applicable, and PRJ's physical release record.
The Virginia Online Case Information System is the statewide starting point. Search Nottoway and reconcile the case number, charge, dates, and court. Certified orders come from the clerk. The court record explains why release should occur, but it cannot show that another sentence, detainer, or transfer did not continue custody.

The captured portal confirms the correct statewide entry point. The Nottoway clerk remains the source for a certified order and local file access.
Search VADOC Nottoway Release Records
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator applies after transfer into state corrections, at state-prison release, or during public community supervision. It is not PRJ's booking archive. Use the seven-digit VADOC number when known. Otherwise search with last name and required first-name information, then compare the live record's identity, number, location, status, and exact date label.
| Search detail | How it helps |
|---|---|
| VADOC number | Strongest identifier for a state corrections record |
| Name | Starts a search but must be checked against other details |
| Location or status | Separates prison custody from community supervision |
| Release Date | VADOC's public date label for a qualifying current record; it may change |
| District assignment | May identify active supervision rather than incarceration |
The locator is geared toward active custody and supervision. A fully inactive person may stop appearing. Request the existing time-computation, transfer, release, or discharge record from VADOC, using Form 17 for an inactive offender when appropriate. Do not promise that every former state prisoner will have a public “released” result.
Nottoway Release Supervision and Recovery
VADOC District 7 in Petersburg serves Nottoway probationers and parolees. A district-office location in the locator means community supervision, not incarceration in that office. Probation follows a court order. Parole follows a Parole Board decision for an eligible sentence. Post-release supervision is another defined status and should not be casually labeled parole.
The regional custody map also includes a documented reentry connection. The Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority's 2025 annual report identifies a Piedmont Regional Jail Recovery Program with Prince Edward and Nottoway as partners and a $50,000 award. That fact establishes a named regional program connection only. It does not promise admission, services, or an outcome for any one released person.
Verify Nottoway Release Across Systems
Virginia Jail VINE is the free notification layer for local and regional jails, including PRJ. Its event terms matter because release, transfer, death, and escape are different changes. A VINE alert is timely evidence, not a certified discharge record. A transfer into VADOC also breaks the notification path: local Jail VINE registration does not migrate to VADOC's separate, eligibility-limited NAAVI program.
PRJ may house U.S. Marshals prisoners. Movement out of PRJ can return a person to USMS or send the person to BOP without community release. The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates from 1982 forward and can show a release date or “Not in BOP Custody.” ICE's ODLS is limited to immigration custody. Neither system proves the absence of custody in another system.
The Virginia State Police registry is narrower still. It can show a released person only when a legal registration duty applies. A displayed incarcerated or civilly committed status weighs against community release, while no result says nothing about most people leaving custody. It is not a general inmate or release index.
Compare Nottoway Release Search Sources
Each portal answers for its own custodian. Combining them is safer than forcing one source to act as a universal county search.
| Source | Best use | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| PRJ offender lookup | Current PRJ custody | No official released archive or retention window |
| PRJ release record | Actual end of a local or regional jail episode | Must be requested after the live entry disappears |
| Virginia Jail VINE | Local-jail custody-change event and alerts | Not a certified disposition or permanent archive |
| Nottoway court file | Bond, dismissal, disposition, or sentence authority | Does not prove physical exit |
| VADOC locator and records | State custody, state release, or active supervision | Not a PRJ booking record |
| BOP or ICE locator | Federal or immigration custody status | Does not resolve state or local custody |
Nottoway County Release Facilities
Nottoway's custody landscape is layered. Adult local detainees go to PRJ in Farmville. Two state corrections sites operate in Burkeville. A separate juvenile center serves six counties, and VCBR is secure civil treatment rather than a jail or prison. Facility identity controls the search and records route.
- Piedmont Regional Jail: current local, state, and USMS custody; confirm community release or transfer through PRJ, VINE, court, and the receiving agency.
- Nottoway Correctional Center: VADOC prison departure may be transfer, supervision, or discharge.
- Nottoway Work Center: a VADOC placement where outside movement does not itself prove discharge.
- Piedmont Regional Juvenile Detention Center: court-controlled juvenile placement with confidential identity and release records.
- Virginia Center for Behavioral Rehabilitation: civil treatment where court-authorized community release differs from a new-arrest transfer to PRJ.
These boundaries can change the meaning of movement. Virginia budget material describes a VCBR resident arrested for a new offense being held at PRJ at Nottoway County's expense. That is a move from secure civil treatment into criminal detention, not release into the community. Juvenile placement is also court controlled and confidential, so it must never be folded into an adult released-inmate list.
Nottoway Regional Release Record History
PRJ identifies itself as Virginia's original regional jail. Amelia, Buckingham, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward Counties replaced three small, overcrowded, noncompliant jails with one authority. The shared Farmville facility opened May 11, 1988 with capacity for 101 people. Its reported maximum capacity later grew to 600, and the authority reports more than 100 employees.
That history explains a search pattern that can otherwise look like a missing county resource. The arresting agency and court may be in Nottoway County, while the booking, current-custody entry, release time, and jail photograph are maintained by a regional authority in Prince Edward County. A requester should follow the record's custodian rather than the county line. PRJ Records is therefore the first documentary route for an adult Nottoway booking held there, while Nottoway courts remain the source for the legal order behind the event.
